Portfolio Plus

Terms of Service & Image Criteria

The GNSI Portfolio + membership level allows professional visual science communicators to show a small portfolio (100 images or fewer per member) of their work in the GNSI Gallery of Visual Science Communicators in Action. This gallery is an educational resource designed to showcase the breadth and depth of work that contemporary visual science communicators create. Images are reviewed by a team of GNSI volunteers before being published to ensure our gallery reflects the highest professional standards.

What is eligible for the gallery:

Any artwork in any medium or style that is designed to communicate science and promote scientific thinking and literacy. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Traditional illustration, medical and anatomical illustration, paleo illustration, botanical illustration, 3D modeling, animation*, infographics, data visualization, sculpture, installations, educational signage, comics, children’s literature, murals, and more.

*Please note: at this time videos cannot be uploaded to the gallery but we encourage uploading a screenshot with a link to your animations hosted elsewhere.

What is not eligible for the gallery:
  • Infringed work
  • Any imagery that is hateful, discriminatory, vulgar, offensive, obscene or otherwise not suited for a professional gallery space
  • Student work
  • Still photography
  • Work older than 20 years unless it is a keystone achievement recognizable by the general public (the blue whale sculpture at the AMNH, The Sibley Guide to Birds, original illustration showing the Archaeopteryx type specimen, etc.)
  • Work that does not meet the review committee’s professional standards for accuracy, mastery of technique, or adherence to peer-review science
  • Work that is overly redundant (i.e. 20 images of fly reproductive parts when 1-2 would sufficiently show your skill in that realm)
  • Other closely related fields that might be part of your career but do not explicitly serve science education. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Portraiture, pure figure drawing/painting, decorative art, crafts, general children’s literature, teaching resources, pure graphic design work, web design, merchandise that is derivative of your illustration practice (i.e. t-shirts with your illustrations on them)

If you have questions about whether your work will be eligible for the

gallery before uploading, please contact us at info@gnsi.org.
