GNSI-DC: Art Preservation
Join us for a look at the preservation process at the Smithsonian in preparing for a new art gallery opening.
Our Speaker: Jia-sun Tsang. Senior Paintings Conservator, Smithsonian Institution's Museum Conservation Institute.
Preserving an Evolving Legacy of American Artists of African Descent
For a decade, paintings conservators at the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute (MCI) collaborated with curators and collection managers at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and prepared for the opening of the Visual Art Gallery at NMAAHC on September 24, 2016, culminating in over 100 painted artworks examined and more than 70 treated. Come see a history of the collection, the rich teamwork, and a selection of studies and treatments of modern and contemporary paintings and painted artworks.
Jia-sun Tsang is senior paintings conservator at the Smithsonian Institution's Museum Conservation Institute, where she has served for 29 years. She also serves SI museums that do not have an in-house paintings conservator. She holds an M.Sc. from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation and an M.Sc. in chemistry from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Since 2007 she has focused on the conservation and analysis of paintings from the collections of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in preparation for its grand opening in fall 2016. She specializes in modern materials research and the conservation of modern and contemporary art.
We look forward to seeing everyone there! There will be a short business meeting and Chapter elections vote. We urge all local GNSI members to come! If you can not attend, GNSI-DC national members may send their BALLOT to Daisy Chung ([email protected]) to be counted. We will also briefly discuss plans for preparation of the GNSI 2018 Conference in Washington DC, and plans for a volunteer member meeting in October.
